designer’s statement

My initial motivation to create the Thrive collection of cutlery and tableware for outdoor use came from my passion both for backcountry adventure and culinary delights. I felt that many of the available products were great utilitarian solutions, but lacked the aesthetic and visceral appeal so central to culinary utensils found in the home and kitchen.

I set about to re-define these utilitarian ‘tools’; first by addressing the small nagging functional details unique to dining in the backcountry like balancing a plate or bowl to avoid dropping the cutlery, slopping hot soup onto one’s hand, losing a spoon to a river or ocean, or packing a large-handled mug into a backpack; and second, by making an aesthetically motivating collection that is a pleasure to use and is crafted to a level where it will serve a long and useful life, becoming a favourite piece of gear.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse range – the functionality of form found in heritage knives, the graceful lines of Japanese bowls, the performance possibilities of the best materials available - I have aimed at designing a collection that will enhance dining in the outdoors and will even find a place from patios to office lunchrooms.
